Certified Interpretive Guide Training
Offered by DE State Parks and the Brandywine Zoo
This is an optional training to take the Certified Interpretive Guide courses, a nationally recognized certification for interpreters by the National Association of Interpretation. Volunteers can sign up to take the course for just the course fee, or additionally select the option to add official certification to your course from NAI for an additional $150.
Location: Killens Pond State Park, 5025 Killens Pond Road, Felton, DE 19943
Dates: January 24 & 31 and February 7 & 9 2017; 9-4pm each day
Fee: $35 for materials only; $185 for materials fee plus CIG certification

Saturday, November 19, 10:30-12 Care for Your Pets like a Keeper Dogs, cats, hamsters, turtles or fish... Just like exotic animals, each pet has its own specific needs and care requirements. We’ll discuss some basic considerations for your pets at home so you can be the best at-home zoo keeper for them! 2017 CSW’s Saturday, January 21, 10:30-12 Animal Training Training is an important part of working with animals. During this workshop, we’ll learn about the basic principles of operant conditioning training and how it improves the lives of our animals at the zoo. This workshop will include a training demonstration with one of our zoo animals and their trainer. Saturday, February 18, 10:30-12 Animal Health and Veterinary Care It takes a lot to take care of exotic animals. Their health at the zoo is a primary issue as animals age, have young, or develop special conditions. Find out what it means to practice veterinary care in an exotic setting with the Brandywine Zoo’s exceptional veterinarian Dr. Erica Miller. Saturday, March 18, 10:30-12 Exhibit Design What goes into making a good home for our animals? Come join us for a workshop all about designing and creating good exhibits for our animals to live in, including a chance to design your very own animal home! Saturday, April 15, 10:30-12 Animal Behavior Become an animal behaviorist for the day and put your observation skills to the test. Learn how zoologists study animals and complete a study of your own. Saturday, May 20, 10:30-12 Exotic Animal Nutrition From carnivores to omnivores to herbivores…ever wonder what and how we feed our animals? Join us in this workshop to discover the world of Exotic Animal Nutrition. Take a tour of our commissary, meet zoo staff, and learn what it takes to safely feed all of our animals, from the tiger to the sloth! |

Saturday, July 15, 10:30-12 Caring for Reptiles & Amphibians Temperature? Humidity? Lighting? Diet? Reptiles and amphibians come with so many questions! Learn the basics of how we care for exotic herps! This will include an close up animal encounter with some of our reptiles, as well as behind the scenes look at our reptile room! Saturday, August 19, 10:30-12 Working with Carnivores Working with carnivores can be a risky business. In this program, learn how our keepers safely work with carnivores like the eagles, otters or tiger. Saturday, September 23, 10:30-12 Working with Exotic Birds Birds can be friendly or temperamental, delicate or hardy. Discover the ‘nitty gritty’ details of working with a variety of birds, from raptors and rheas to macaws in this program! Saturday, October 28, 10:30-12 Zookeeping 101 Explore job basics, from husbandry to vet care to animal training, plus we’ll as discuss what programs to study in school. We’ll answer questions about colleges and courses, volunteering, interning and other ways to get into the field. Saturday, November 18, 10:30-12 Wildlife Rehabilitation Wildlife rehabilitators help nurse injured or sick animals back to health with the ultimate goal of release back into the wild. During this program, we’ll discuss the principles, challenges and successes of rehabilitation, then meet some rehabilitated animals who could not be released that now call the zoo home. |
